Street Art Spots in Frankfurt: an Ostend Route on Foot

If you want to see street art in Frankfurt, you do not have to search: in the Ostend the city's largest walls sit within two kilometres of each other, and the most important one, the Hall of Fame by Ratswegkreisel, is also where 360T, Comdeo and the Nestlé legal team sprayed with us. Here is where to go, what awaits you there and the order that makes sense on foot.

One caveat first: legal walls are not an exhibition. What hangs at Ratswegkreisel today may be painted over in four weeks. The places stay, the pieces change. That is exactly why a tour there never looks the same twice.

1. Hall of Fame by Ratswegkreisel

Under and along the road bridges between Hanauer Landstraße, Ratsweg and Kaiserleibrücke lies the largest legal graffiti area in the city. The walls are long enough for single pieces to run 50 metres; 360T painted a 3D piece of exactly that length there with 50 people, partly from ladders. Free access, any time, from the public path. Start here and you understand at once how a hall of fame works: new grows over old, and nothing gets framed.

2. Osthafen, Schwedlerweg near Schmickstraße

Ten minutes further into the harbour area stands a wall expressly released for graffiti. Around it, large-format pieces on industrial buildings change over time, with cranes and warehouses as the backdrop. Visible from the street; harbour operations and yards stay off limits.

3. Naxoshalle courtyard, Waldschmidtstraße 19

The Naxoshalle is a cultural venue, its courtyard a legal surface where new work appears regularly. A good stop because someone is often painting right there, and you see how long outline, fill-in and background really take.

4. Hanauer Landstraße and Danziger Platz

Neither is a single art spot; they are the connection. Along Hanauer Landstraße between Ostendstraße and Osthafen, graffiti and murals keep appearing on commercial facades, and Danziger Platz by the Ostbahnhof is the node where the route turns. For a tour that means: do not walk straight through, take the side streets.

5. Open-air gallery at Friedensbrücke

West of the main station, on the surfaces of the Friedensbrücke by the Main, lies the city's second large legal gallery. If you still have energy after the Ostend, take the S-Bahn to the main station and walk down to the river.

6. Sachsenhausen: the portrait on Diesterwegstraße

At the corner of Diesterwegstraße and Schwanthalerstraße hangs a large photorealistic portrait of a woman titled "Let your Life grow" by the artist Cor, freely visible from the street.

The order that works on foot

Start at S-Bahn station Ostendstraße, along Hanauer Landstraße to Danziger Platz, on to the Osthafen and finally to Ratswegkreisel. That is a good two hours with photo stops. Friedensbrücke and Sachsenhausen are a second day or a second afternoon, not an add-on.

FAQ

Isn't looking at street art just walking around?

Without tasks, yes. That is why our tour has a task in the app at every stop, and the group decides itself how long it stays in front of a piece. If you only walk for two hours, you chose the wrong route.

Can you just go to Ratswegkreisel?

Yes, the walls sit by the public path and are accessible at any time. For spraying at the wall during a workshop we obtain the permit ourselves.

How long does the Ostend route take?

Ostendstraße, Hanauer Landstraße, Osthafen, Ratswegkreisel: a good two hours with photo stops. As a team tour, two to three hours is the frame, shorter works too.

Will the pieces still be there next month?

Not for certain at legal walls, they get painted over. Large murals like the portrait in Sachsenhausen last longer. The places themselves stay, which is why this is a route, not a list of pieces.

Can the tour be combined with a workshop?

Yes, on the same day. The tour needs no setup, so it fits before or after the graffiti workshop or action painting. Say so at the enquiry and we plan both together.
