T-Mobile Robotics: the team's own product becomes the motif

Drone shot: the complete Paint the Bus at the Wellenwerk Berlin with the lettering AL ROBOZ and the T logo in turquoise, white and pink

T-Mobile Robotics celebrated a closing team event at the Wellenwerk in Berlin, and the workshop motif came from the team itself: the robot dog they had designed themselves beforehand. It was the first Paint the Bus at this location.

The task

A closing team event has a task no standard programme solves: it is not meant to be just some nice afternoon but the capstone on something the people have built together.

That rules out the usual approach. A neutral motif any group could spray would have looked exactly like that here: like a date you could also have done with another team. So the question was less what looks good than what means something within this team.

The execution

The motif came from the team itself: the robot dog T-Mobile Robotics had designed themselves beforehand. It became the workshop motif, sprayed by the people who designed it.

That turns the usual order around. Normally we bring a motif and the group makes it their own. Here the motif already existed, and the task was to translate it into a different technique: from construction into the can, from precision into large format. It was also the first Paint the Bus at the Wellenwerk.

The result

A team sprayed its own product. That is the sentence this project hangs on.

For you as the planner that is the lever a generic creative format does not have. If the motif comes from the company, the question of the point of the date is answered before anyone asks it. Nobody has to explain why spraying of all things, because the result speaks for itself: there stands the thing everyone worked on, in a form in which it never existed before.

Frequently asked questions about this project

Can our own product or logo be the motif of the team event?

Yes, and that is the strongest case. At T-Mobile Robotics the workshop motif was the robot dog the team had designed themselves beforehand. It was sprayed at the closing team event at the Wellenwerk in Berlin, by exactly the people who had designed it.

The difference to a motif we bring along lies not in the look but in the reasoning. A neutral motif looks good at the end. Your own product or logo turns the date into a statement about the team itself, and that carries much further internally when someone asks about the point of the budget. In practice we need only one thing for it in advance: a usable template, whether logo, product drawing or rendering. We translate the rest into the technique, from the precision of the template to the large format of the can. Ask for that early in the quote process, then the motif is settled before the date and not on the event day.

“Despite complete lack of talent in the team, we created a result in the end that really everyone is proud of.”
Andreas Scheifele
“[…] 28 colleagues aged between 20 and 60, and all of us completely clueless. […] In the end we were really proud of ourselves. […] As a keepsake, Luca gave us photos taken with the drone.”
Tordis Lehmann
“[…] What surprised me was that you don't have to be an artist, because everyone gets individual attention and is encouraged to try things out. […] By the end we had created a great artwork and had a big grin on our faces.”
