Team in painting suits working on a canvas laid on the floor in the photo studio, Toyota event in Hamburg-Ottensen

Toyota brought influencers into a photo studio in Hamburg-Ottensen and had them work themselves. Painting and spraying happened on canvases, with Action Painting and with graffiti, under lighting built for cameras.

The brief

A photo studio is built for images, not for paint. That's exactly where Toyota invited influencers, and instead of a date where they'd just be photographed, they got something to do.

That shifts the whole setup. In an activity whose purpose is images, the participant is guest and producer at once, and the result has to hold up in front of the camera, not only in hindsight. A format that only runs in the background doesn't work there. Something has to come out of it that you can pick up, hold up, and photograph, and that goes for every single person. For us, that meant: the piece isn't the keepsake of the date, it is the date.

How it went

Work happened on canvases, with Action Painting and with graffiti in the same setting. Both techniques ran in the studio, side by side, on the same surface per person.

This is where this project differs from our other graffiti dates. A graffiti workshop with us otherwise always happens outdoors on a real wall, because a wall isn't something you can bring into a room. On canvas, though, the technique becomes portable, and that makes it studio-ready. Action Painting works indoors and outdoors either way. Both together in one studio makes a combination we don't otherwise offer as standard, and here it was dictated by the venue.

The result

We have our own shots from the day, four photos from the studio. They're real event photos, not stock images, and they show exactly the setting this project is about.

What you take from this as a planner has little to do with Toyota and a lot to do with your own venue. If your date takes place in a room where a wall isn't an option, that doesn't mean spray paint is off the table. It means the surface belongs in the concept instead of being assumed. Canvas instead of wall isn't a fallback here, it's its own decision, made in advance and stated in the quote.

Frequently asked questions about this project

Does graffiti work indoors too, for example in a photo studio?

On canvas, yes. On a wall, no. At Toyota in Hamburg, both Action Painting and graffiti ran in the photo studio, each on canvas. Our graffiti workshops on a real wall, by contrast, always happen outdoors, even a large indoor space doesn't change that.

For your planning, this is the single most important distinction, and it's often answered wrong. The question isn't whether the technique works indoors, but what it's sprayed onto. A canvas you can bring into any room, cover, and take away again afterwards. A wall you can't. If someone offers you a graffiti workshop on a wall indoors, it's worth asking whose wall that is and what it looks like afterwards. With us, indoors means canvas, and that's stated in the quote beforehand, not asked on setup day. At Toyota, this exact decision was the starting point: the venue dictated the surface, not the other way round.

Does a format like this work when the guests are there for photos?

Yes, because the result itself is the shot. At Toyota, influencers worked on their own canvases in a photo studio in Hamburg-Ottensen. By the end, each person held a piece they could show, hold up, and photograph.

That's what sets a creative format apart from most items on a brand activation programme. A show delivers photos of people watching. A format where everyone works themselves delivers photos of people who made something, plus the object itself. For Action Painting we plan groups from 15 to 500 people, and the flow stays the same at either end of that range. If your date needs to produce imagery, that's the difference between a backdrop and a result that's understandable without a caption. That's also why the Toyota date has its own shots from the studio, not staged motifs someone built later for a photo series.

“We had a team event and sprayed the wall at Bahnwärter Thiel all over, with great joy. Huge fun and great instruction!”

“[…] 28 colleagues aged between 20 and 60, and all of us completely clueless. […] In the end we were really proud of ourselves. […] As a keepsake, Luca gave us photos taken with the drone.”
Tordis Lehmann
“[…] What surprised me was that you don't have to be an artist, because everyone gets individual attention and is encouraged to try things out. […] By the end we had created a great artwork and had a big grin on our faces.”
