Aerial view of the forecourt at Bahnwärter Thiel: a large team stands in front of the CRX MAGIC lettering, each letter designed by a different group

At CRX Markets, every part of a large team got its own letter of a lettering on the wall at Bahnwärter Thiel in Munich's Schlachthofviertel. Because each group approached its letter differently, the wording ended up genuinely funny.

The moment it turned funny

A lettering on a wall always looks the same on paper: same height, same handwriting, one word. Here, every part of the team got its own letter, and the word only came together once everyone was done.

That's exactly where the effect nobody can plan for came from. Each group approached its letter differently, with different colors, different outlines, different character. The result wasn't a clean logo but a wording that turned out genuinely funny, because you can see who stood at each letter.

How you split a lettering across a large team

The split is the actual work, and it happens before the first spray. One letter per group means each group gets its own clearly defined area, but still has to talk to its neighbors, because height and baseline have to line up.

That's why this format works for a large team. Everyone works at the same time, nobody waits on a station, and yet a single result comes out of it instead of many separate pictures. For graffiti we plan groups from 10 to 1,000 people, and the lettering simply grows with the number of letters.

Where the artwork went afterwards

The finished artwork didn't stay on the wall, or at least not only. It carries over into digital use, for example as an email signature.

That turns an afternoon into an asset that runs every day. Creativity and team spirit are words that show up in every team-event pitch. The difference here is that both stay visible afterwards: whoever sees a colleague's signature sees an image their own team worked on, not a stock photo from the brand library. For you as the planner, that's the justification that carries past the event day.

Frequently asked questions about this project

What does a team do with the artwork after the event?

It takes it into the digital world. At CRX Markets, the lettering sprayed at Munich's Hall of Fame stayed usable afterwards, among other things as an email signature.

That's the part that sets a creative format apart from a day out. A team event costs budget and usually leaves behind photos nobody opens again after two weeks. Artwork that lives in a signature block runs every day and explains itself. The only thing that matters is thinking about the reuse in advance, because an image meant to work digitally later gets photographed and approved differently than one that only stays on the wall. Clarify that in the quote, not afterwards. At CRX Markets the reuse was part of the thinking from the start, which is why the afternoon turned into an image that keeps running in daily life. Creativity and team spirit aren't confined to a recap then, they show up in every email.

How do you involve a very large team in a single image?

By splitting the image into parts that belong together. At CRX Markets, every part of the team got its own letter of the lettering, and only all the letters together spelled the word on the wall.

The advantage over separate individual pictures lies in the coordination. Whoever has their own letter works independently and waits on nobody. Whoever knows other letters stand to the left and right has to agree on height and baseline. It's exactly this mix of an area of your own and a shared line that afterwards gets called team spirit. For graffiti we plan groups from 10 to 1,000 people, and the number of letters simply grows with it. In practice, that means for your planning: you don't need to pin the group size to one number in advance, only know whether the word is long enough. At CRX Markets that math worked out, even though the team was genuinely large.

“We had a team event and sprayed the wall at Bahnwärter Thiel all over, with great joy. Huge fun and great instruction!”

“[…] 28 colleagues aged between 20 and 60, and all of us completely clueless. […] In the end we were really proud of ourselves. […] As a keepsake, Luca gave us photos taken with the drone.”
Tordis Lehmann
“[…] What surprised me was that you don't have to be an artist, because everyone gets individual attention and is encouraged to try things out. […] By the end we had created a great artwork and had a big grin on our faces.”
