For the broccoli brand Bimi, a genuinely large artwork went up at the Hall of Fame on Ratswegkreisel in Frankfurt-Ostend, with brand lettering and a broccoli character. The group worked in rain ponchos on the legal wall, tracked by drone footage.

The brief

Brand lettering on a wall is a different task from a free motif. It has to stay legible, it has to work from a distance, and it still can't look like a printed sticker — otherwise you could have just printed it.

Then came the character. A broccoli figure next to the lettering means two very different tasks run side by side: a typographic one and an illustrative one. Both on the same surface, in the same time window, with a group that had practised neither beforehand.

How it went

The work happened at the Hall of Fame on Ratswegkreisel, a legal wall in Frankfurt's Ostend district. The Bimi lettering and the broccoli character came together as one large, connected artwork.

A Hall of Fame is the right surface for this task, because it gives a brand motif the size it needs. Lettering that looks good at two metres reads completely differently at ten metres, and only at full scale do you see whether the letter spacing and the character actually work together. Drone footage ran in parallel, because an artwork this wide can't be fully captured from eye level.

The result

By the end, a large Bimi artwork stood on a legal Frankfurt wall, sprayed by a group in rain ponchos.

For you as the planner, this project's most reassuring takeaway is in here. An outdoor date doesn't fail because water falls from the sky — it fails because nobody prepared for it. Ponchos cost very little, paint on a wall dries regardless, and the group remembers exactly that fact afterwards. What you need to clarify isn't the weather — it's whether the quote states who brings material for cases like this.

Frequently asked questions about this project

Where can you legally spray graffiti as a team event in Frankfurt?

At a Hall of Fame — a wall where spraying is explicitly permitted. For Bimi, that was the Hall of Fame on Ratswegkreisel in Frankfurt's Ostend district, where a large artwork with brand lettering and a broccoli character went up.

This is the question to settle before any other. Spraying on an arbitrary wall is a legal problem no matter how good the idea is, and a company logo on someone else's property doesn't make it better. A legal surface solves that and brings two more advantages: it's large enough for a whole group to work side by side, and it's tall enough for a brand motif to make its impact. A graffiti workshop with us always happens outdoors on a real wall anyway, so a Hall of Fame works for the format rather than against it. For graffiti we plan groups from 10 to 1,000 people — the width of the wall decides how many work at once.

How do you make an outdoor date independent of the weather?

Through the equipment and the format choice, not through the forecast. At the Bimi date at the Frankfurt Hall of Fame, the group wears rain ponchos in the footage, work on the wall continued throughout, and the artwork was finished.

This is the part a quote should answer before anyone talks about motifs. Ponchos and cover material are the cheapest line item in the budget, and they decide whether a group keeps working or takes shelter. The second layer is the format itself: a graffiti workshop on a wall always happens outdoors with us. If a date needs to be completely weather-independent, we set up Action Painting instead, because that runs indoors just as well as outdoors. Both belong in the quote, not in a decision on event day, when twenty other things are already happening at once. For graffiti we plan groups from 10 to 1,000 people, for Action Painting 15 to 500.

“We had a team event and sprayed the wall at Bahnwärter Thiel all over, with great joy. Huge fun and great instruction!”

“[…] 28 colleagues aged between 20 and 60, and all of us completely clueless. […] In the end we were really proud of ourselves. […] As a keepsake, Luca gave us photos taken with the drone.”
Tordis Lehmann
“[…] What surprised me was that you don't have to be an artist, because everyone gets individual attention and is encouraged to try things out. […] By the end we had created a great artwork and had a big grin on our faces.”
