Street Art Spots in Berlin: a Walking Route from Kreuzberg to Friedrichshain

Berlin has more street art than one afternoon holds, but the densest stretch lies between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain: on foot from Oppelner Straße across the Oberbaumbrücke to the East Side Gallery. Here is where to go, what is there to see and the order that makes sense on foot. One caveat first: street art changes. What hangs on a firewall today may be painted over. The places stay, the pieces do not.

1. Oppelner Straße: the yellow man and the rounded heads

At Oppelner Straße 3 in Kreuzberg stands the "Yellow Man" by the Brazilian duo Os Gêmeos, a little further at Oppelner Straße 46/47 the "Rounded Heads" by Nomad. Both murals are freely visible from the street, the starting point of the route and the reason Kreuzberg sits at the top of every street art map of the city.

2. Oberbaumbrücke: the crossing

From Oppelner Straße it is a few minutes to the Oberbaumbrücke. It links Kreuzberg with Friedrichshain, and the view from the bridge over the Spree to the Friedrichshain bank is the photo stop where every group pauses.

3. Warschauer Straße 47: "Suspended"

Right behind the bridge, at Warschauer Straße 47, hangs "Suspended" by the Italian artist Alice Pasquini, a mural visitBerlin included in its street art route. From here it is a short walk to the RAW-Gelände.

4. RAW-Gelände, Revaler Straße 99

The former railway repair works on Revaler Straße is Friedrichshain's public street art site: halls, a bunker and yards with changing large-format works. It is not a released spraying ground; anyone who wants to put something on a wall here clears it with the operators, and anyone who just wants to look can come in any time.

5. East Side Gallery

Finally the East Side Gallery on Mühlenstraße: 1,316 metres of preserved Wall between Oberbaumbrücke and Ostbahnhof, accessible from the outside around the clock, free of charge. It is a listed gallery and not a wall for spraying; look yes, touch no. If you walk the route in reverse, you start here and end in Kreuzberg at dinner.

The order that works on foot

Oppelner Straße, Oberbaumbrücke, Warschauer Straße 47, RAW-Gelände, East Side Gallery: a good hour of walking, more with photo stops and time at the East Side Gallery, all without a train. If you want more, add Lichtenberg, where we work at the Wellenwerk, but that is a separate afternoon.

Our street art tour for teams in Berlin runs in Kreuzberg, app-guided with tasks at the stops; a guided version is available on request. FAQ

Isn't looking at street art just walking around?

Without tasks, yes. That is why our tour has a task in the app at every stop, and the group decides itself how long it stays in front of a piece.

Can you spray at the East Side Gallery or on the RAW-Gelände?

No. The East Side Gallery is a listed monument, the RAW-Gelände a cultural site with operators. For spraying we use legal surfaces whose permit we obtain ourselves.

How long does the route take?

A good hour of walking, more with photo stops and time at the East Side Gallery. As a team tour, two to three hours is the frame, shorter works too.

Will the pieces still be there next month?

Large murals like the Yellow Man last for years, works on firewalls and at the RAW-Gelände change. The places themselves stay, which is why this is a route, not a list of pieces.

Can the tour be combined with a workshop?

Yes, on the same day. The tour needs no setup, so it fits before or after the graffiti workshop or action painting. Say so at the enquiry and we plan both together.
